The Ballard Ship Canal Early Works Package provided site preparation, civil infrastructure, and a new public dock in preparation of the larger Ship Canal Water Quality Project (SCWQP) in Seattle, Washington. The project site had a history of contamination; including hydrocarbons, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), and metals, resulting in the issuance of an Administrative Order with the Construction Stormwater General Permit (CSWGP). To ensure proper treatment of site water, Clear Water Services was contracted by Redside Construction to install a chemically-enhanced sand filtration (CESF) system with 18,000 gallon treatment tanks and 10,000lbs of granular activated carbon. The system was deployed to treat extracted groundwater as well as surface stormwater runoff. In less than a year, nearly 700,000 gallons of water was treated and discharged to the Lake Washington Ship Canal in compliance with permit benchmarks. Clear Water Services provided discharge permit support, Water Management Plan development with engineering, and water quality sampling and reporting for permit compliance in addition to treatment system design, installation, operations, and maintenance.
