A manufacturing facility producing stainless steel and titanium components through casting processes experienced inconsistent groundwater quality. At times, contaminant levels, including heavy metals and PCBs, were undetectable, but they periodically spiked to twice the federal Maximum Contaminant Levels (MCLs). To maintain compliance with discharge permits and protect surrounding water resources, a robust and reliable treatment solution was needed.
Clear Water Services, in collaboration with Landau Associates, designed and installed a 1,500gpm chemically enhanced sand filtration (CESF) system with three redundant treatment trains to ensure uninterrupted performance. Granular activated carbon (GAC) was integrated into the system to enhance the removal of persistent contaminants through adsorption.
Since installation, the system has achieved outstanding performance: turbidity has been reduced by 99%, heavy metal concentrations have dropped significantly, and TCE, PCE, and PCBs have consistently remained below detectable limits. The system has successfully treated and discharged over 923 million gallons of stormwater in full compliance with permit requirements.
