This major marine cargo terminal in Seattle required a comprehensive stormwater treatment solution to manage runoff from its 192-acre site, which is entirely covered by impervious surfaces and located adjacent to a sensitive waterway. To meet Industrial Stormwater General Permit (ISGP) benchmarks, Clear Water Services designed and installed four customized chemically enhanced sand filtration (CESF) systems, each tailored to the specific flow demands of its drainage area.
The systems were engineered to reduce turbidity, total suspended solids, petroleum hydrocarbons, copper, and zinc. Treatment Systems A and B were each built to handle flows up to 2,500 gallons per minute (gpm), while Systems C and D managed 1,200gpm and 1,000gpm, respectively. All four systems utilized automated chemical dosing to enhance metals precipitation and treatment effectiveness.
To address site constraints, Clear Water implemented compact layouts using vertical tanks for pretreatment and mixing. The systems also feature advanced SCADA controls for remote monitoring, real-time adjustments, and operational efficiency. Despite tight timelines and active site conditions, Clear Water successfully completed the multi-phase installation, ensuring long-term compliance and environmental protection for one of the region’s most critical industrial facilities.
The CESF-20 is a compact, all-in-one treatment control unit that integrates chemical injection, water quality monitoring, pump controls, and sand filtration into a single, streamlined system housed within a 20-foot container. Its space-efficient design simplifies setup while supporting a wide range of treatment needs.
Equipped with PLC-based controls, the CESF-20 delivers advanced automation, including remote access and control, real-time data management, alarm and alert logging, system diagnostics, 4G wireless connectivity, webcam visibility, and onsite weather monitoring. These features provide a reliable and cost-effective solution that supports both efficient remote operations and consistent, reliable environmental compliance.

Clear Water Services offers many adsorptive (and ion-exchange) mixed media filtration options and equipment to remove just about any contaminant from water or air. Our adsorptive multi-media filtration options treat water for heavy metals, hydrocarbons, VOCs, PFAS, PCBs, nutrients, microbes, pesticides/herbicides, and others.
Our team of experts can evaluate historical water characteristics, site constraints, and performance goals, and run bench/pilot tests to determine the best media for the job. Alternatively, we can simply supply the media and equipment per specification. Our equipment options include both gravity drain (passive) and pressurized (active) options, that can act as stand-alone treatment or as a final polishing step based on the application.
